MUTARE-The Zimbabwe Republic Police has guaranteed the safety of journalists
when discharging their duties before, during and after the upcoming August 23
harmonised elections as the two parties continue to deepen their cordial relations.
Speaking during a national media indaba held by the Zimbabwe Media
Commission in Mutare recently, National Police Spokesperson Assistant
Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police force has mandated all district
commanding officers to work closely with the media in their discharge of duties
and ensure their safety during public gatherings.
“To avoid situations where journalists are harassed by political players or
subjected to any form of violence, we have deployed district police commanding
officers to whom journalists can engage with. This also requires journalists to play
their part in identifying themselves with the police as well as operating within the
confines of the law,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
He added that political parties should also prioritise the safety of journalists and
contribute in the maintenance of law and order in the country during political
rallies.
“The safety of media practitioners lies with all stakeholders involved in the
electoral process. By maintaining peace and order during public gatherings we are
most assured reporters carrying out their duties will be safe. We call for both
political players and journalist not to incite violence by any means to ensure the
safe of all and pave way for free, fair and credible elections,” he added.
He further stressed that the police and the media had the same mandate in serving
the public which called for mutual working relations.
“The police are there to maintain peace and order while journalists disseminate
crucial information that assists in the maintenance of peace. Journalism is not done
in private as we all serve the public and aim to foster national unity.
“We need to move away from hostile relations and come to the understanding that
both parties are working for the good of the public. There is life to be maintained
after an election and that peaceful life is ensured by the police and the media as
well,” he said.
